Thing 6: Bookmarking and Curating Sites

By the end of this module, you should have completed the following:

  1. Explore the bookmarking and curation sites
  2. Watch the video on curation
  3. Comment on which one you liked best for your personal finds and how could this be helpful for students as well.
  4. EXTRA CREDIT:  Sign up for one of these programs and add in THREE sites that you would like to bookmark or curate

WHAT IS DIGITAL CURATION?

Curation in the art world is about gathering together pieces of art in order to preserve and maintain them. Often it is about combining similar pieces of art to form a cohesive collection or show.

Digital curation is about the same thing, gathering together digital assets, whether it be websites, images, videos, or PDF files.  With the abundance of digital information, the curation of these assets is important in order to maintain them in a cohesive and understand way for your research projects or personal finds.

Here is a quick video overview of digital curation:

PLACES TO CURATE OR BOOKMARK YOUR DIGITAL ASSETS:

There are many programs that will help you bookmark or curate your digital assets.  Take a look at what I have found to be some of the best options here.    Look at the choices in the right hand column.

Explore these options and then comment below on which one you liked best for your personal finds and comment as well on how you could see students could make use of these programs.

Remember, EXTRA CREDIT if you sign up for one of these programs and add in THREE sites that you would like to bookmark or curate.

  2. Out of the bookmarking and curation sites, I liked the visuals of Symbaloo the best. I feel that it is easy to organize and to navigate. As far as functionality, however, I see more potential for students and teachers elsewhere.

Students might benefit most from using Diigo. Not only can it be accessed from anywhere, but the highlight feature would be incredibly useful for students to read at their own pace and to use as a study tool again later. Highlighting certain sections of assigned reading could help in self-assessment (i.e. “What sections were confusing for you?” or “What did you think was the most important part of the reading?”). Such information is useful for both teachers and students alike. I also like the snapshot feature, which will archive a web page. This allows students to capture and keep information for research, even if the page is time-sensitive. Blogs and wikis can change quickly, and this feature preserves great finds before they disappear. The ability to download pages to view offline and incorporate pictures would allow students to make presentations and use information even when internet service is down.

As a teacher, I would be most interested in Evernote. It has many of the same features as Diigo, including the fact that it can be accessed from anywhere. The tutorial pointed out that Evernote allows you to store a wide range of documents and access them from many different sources. Again, this would be incredibly useful technology during those days when the internet service or printer service is down and our lesson requires a certain document (we’ve all been there at some point!).

    1. I"ve shown all these same ones to students and they all definitely like Diigo the best.

  3. This was similar to the Pinterest that we all got addicted to this year! We used it in computer class for many projects from cooking, crafting to getting ideas for Best Buddies parties.
I liked the Diigo since it seemed to be similar and easy to get around. I am planning a trip up to Prince Edward Island and used this tool for gathering sites, maps and info!
Thanks for the highlighting tip, Maria!

  4. I like using Evernote because in theory I'll be able to use it regardless of the platform. I haven't had much luck downloading it on my computer however but when I do I know what sites I'll put on it.
